Sarvam AI, with the backing of Lightspeed venture capitalist, will build the first generative AI platform in India in a half year, the founder announced at the event on April 26, 2025. The minister told Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw that Sarvam AI was selected for this pioneering project and promised the tool would compete closely with other global models. “Sarvam’s platform will compete with the best worldwide,” Vaishnaw mentioned.
During discussions, the minister sought a development timeline from Sarvam’s founders, who committed to delivering the platform in six months. To achieve this ambitious goal, the government would give 400 GPUs for six months so Sarvam could build up large language models with 70 billion parameters. This initiative will mark the beginning of leading India towards an AI innovation frontier, with a very strict homegrown talent and infrastructure towards a competitive, indigenous AI ecosystem.
