China Urges India to Resist US Tariff Threats Together

New Delhi: On Tuesday, China urged India to unite against the “US misuse of tariffs” and tackle shared challenges. In an X post, Chinese Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing criticized US President Donald Trump’s 50% tariff threat on China, urging nations to champion broad dialogue, genuine multilateralism, and resist unilateralism and protectionism.

“China’s economy thrives on a robust system driving steady growth and global benefits. Our manufacturing strength lies in a comprehensive, evolving industrial base, consistent R&D funding, and a commitment to innovation. As a staunch supporter of globalization and multilateralism, China boosts the global economy, contributing roughly 30% to annual growth. We’ll keep collaborating worldwide to protect the WTO-led multilateral trade framework,” Yu stated.

“China-India trade ties thrive on mutual gains and complementary strengths. With the US tariff overreach threatening development rights, especially for Global South nations, the two biggest developing countries must stand firm together. Trade wars yield no victors.

Nations should embrace consultation, uphold multilateralism, and counter-protectionism,” she emphasized. This follows China’s $582 billion goods trade with the US in 2024, despite a $263-295 billion trade deficit fueling tensions. Trump’s Truth Social post warned of a 50% tariff hike unless China reverses its 34% increase by April 8, pushing total US tariffs on Chinese goods to 104%. China pledged retaliation, promising measures to protect its interests if Trump acts.
